When we used to work at the Smith College bookstore, we would get sent out to run errands from time to time. Upon arriving back at the bookstore after a trip to the hardware store, Matt walked over to where I was (behind the register) and calmly said, “It’s always the same, it’s just a shame… that’s awl”, holding out the awl for me to see when getting to the last two words. He was referencing That’s All by Genesis. The great thing is– I have no idea why we ever needed an awl in the bookstore.

On The Showbiz Show with David Spade which ran on Comedy Central for awhile, there was a story about Phil Collins separating from his wife. According to the story, the last thing his wife said was “it’s all been a pack of lies!”, a reference to In The Air Tonight from the classic Face Value album. Pretty good, even though it doesn’t have the hits like No Jacket Required does.

And if there’s such a thing as songdrumming, I think (besides maybe Hotel California by The Eagles) everyone knows the big “Phil-in” just before In The Air Tonight gets more rocking at the end.
Also, (and I will never live this down) when I was younger I thought he sang “it’s all been a pack of ice” because my little kid logic didn’t know what a “pack of lies” was. Actually, I still don’t, but whatever.
